Holmeswood is nearby on the B5246 road from Rufford to Mere Brow and lies slightly south-east of Martin Mere.
Rufford Old Hall is a National Trust property situated along the main road through the village.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Rufford Branch) runs through the village as does the River Douglas.
Rufford is on the Northern Railway Ormskirk to Preston line.
