Rufford and Holmeswood are two adjacent villages in rural West Lancashire.
Holmeswood is on the B5246 road from Rufford to Mere Brow and lies just south of Martin Mere Wetland Centre.
Holmeswood has a small village hall (now home to the village nursery school); a methodist primary school; a bowling club and a tennis club
Rufford, which lies on the A59 (Liverpool to Preston) road, is 5½ miles north east of Ormskirk and covers 3,000 acres of mostly flat land which rises slightly towards Holmeswood in the north.
The parish is largely rural with little or no industry. The farmland is grade one agricultural land. The soil is loam over sand and much of the land is used for arable farming or pasture.
In the early 20th century the village was described as "one of the prettiest in South Lancashire" and was a destination for day trippers from neighbouring towns.
